Molecular, Cellular & Integrative Physiology

The Molecular, Cellular & Integrative Physiology Home Area is an interdepartmental Ph.D. program that brings together renowned faculty to educate the next generation of scientists to explore complex biological functions in both homeostatic and pathological states. Students in our program are trained to think creatively and analytically about intricate processes that regulate the function of biological systems. We provide our students with access to cutting-edge technology and careful guidance to prepare them for careers in biomedical and life science research. Our program is currently rated as first in the nation by the National Research Council (NRC) for quality of Ph.D. programs in Physiology. This high ranking reflects numerous objective measures as assessed by the NRC, including the level of success of our students, the professional achievements of our faculty, the financial support provided to our students and the professional placement of our students following completion of the Ph.D. Our nearly 100 MCIP faculty offer a vast spectrum of biological systems for exploration with their foci ranging from fundamental discovery in basic biology to clinical investigations of human diseases. However, exploration of the molecular and cellular mechanisms that integrate function in complex systems provides a common scientific thread through all of our labs, as well as the foundation for our students’ success in developing their own independent careers.
